The Carrier Level Baseband Interception
Unlike modifying a ringtone or deleting an application, the Voicemail system is not a localized software daemon running on your iPhone’s CPU. It is a remote server architecture hosted by your cellular provider (AT&T, T-Mobile, Vodafone). When you reject a call, the iOS kernel simply sends a mathematical “drop” signal to the cellular tower, which then autonomously redirects the caller to the remote Voicemail server. To completely eradicate Voicemail, you cannot simply flip a toggle in the iOS Settings; you must transmit a specialized cryptographic MMI (Man-Machine Interface) code directly to the carrier’s switching architecture.
How to Turn Off Voicemail on iPhone
Because Apple cannot control third-party carrier infrastructure, you must utilize the iPhone’s native dialler to inject raw USSD (Unstructured Supplementary Service Data) codes to disable the call-forwarding logic.
1. Method 1: The Raw USSD Code Injection (The Universal Standard):
* Unlock your iPhone and open the native Phone app.
* Tap the Keypad tab at the bottom.
* You must instruct the carrier to disable “Call Forwarding – Busy/Unanswered.”
* Type exactly: ##004#
* Tap the green Call button.
* A grey diagnostic screen will instantly appear, displaying raw mathematical telemetry (e.g., “Setting Interrogation Succeeded, Voice Call Forwarding”). If the screen says “Succeeded,” the carrier has severed the link to the voicemail server. If it says “Failed,” your specific carrier blocks this standardized code.
2. Method 2: The Carrier-Specific MMI Codes (If Method 1 Fails):
* If ##004# is blocked, you must inject the specific code required by your regional provider.
* AT&T (USA): Dial *#61# and note the phone number it displays. Then dial *61* [the number] * 11 * 30 #.
* T-Mobile (USA): Dial ##61# to disable unanswered forwarding.
* Verizon (USA): Dial *73 to deactivate all call forwarding.
* Vodafone/EE/O2 (UK): Dial ##002# to cancel all diverts.
3. Method 3: The Nuclear Option (Calling Customer Service):
* Many modern 5G carriers have entirely blocked user-level USSD codes to prevent accidental network routing errors.
* If all mathematical codes return “Failed,” you must physically call your carrier’s customer service line (e.g., dial 611).
* You must explicitly instruct the representative: “Please permanently disable the Voicemail feature on my account at the network level.” They will execute the command on their master terminal, instantly terminating the service for your SIM card.
