If you are typing a long paragraph on your iPhone and realize you made a typo three sentences earlier, editing the text can be incredibly frustrating. Trying to tap the exact space between two tiny letters often results in the cursor jumping to the wrong word entirely.
Instead of repeatedly poking at your screen, you can use a brilliant hidden gesture that instantly transforms your entire digital keyboard into a highly precise laptop trackpad.
How to Trigger the Hidden Trackpad
- Open any app where you can type (like Notes, Messages, or Mail) and bring up the standard iOS keyboard.
- Type a few sentences so you have text to navigate through.
- Press and hold your thumb firmly on the Spacebar. (Do not tap it quickly; press and hold).
- Wait approximately one second. The individual letters on the keyboard will suddenly vanish, turning all the keys completely blank.
- You will feel a subtle haptic vibration confirming the trackpad is active.
Navigating the Cursor
Once the keys go blank, do not lift your thumb. Keep it pressed against the glass.
You can now slide your thumb anywhere across the entire blank keyboard area. As you drag your thumb up, down, left, and right, the blinking text cursor in your paragraph will perfectly mirror your movements. You can glide the cursor smoothly through sentences and drop it exactly between the two specific letters you need to edit.
When the cursor is perfectly positioned, simply lift your thumb off the glass. The keyboard letters will instantly reappear, allowing you to backspace the typo and continue typing.
Disabling Shake to Undo (Optional)
A related frustration when editing text is the “Shake to Undo” feature. If you aggressively shake your iPhone while typing, a pop-up appears asking if you want to undo your typing. If you trigger this accidentally by moving your hands too quickly, you can disable it entirely.
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap Accessibility, then tap Touch.
- Toggle the Shake to Undo switch to the Off position.
You can still easily undo text mistakes by simply swiping three fingers to the left across your screen.
