Apple’s “Focus” modes are powerful tools for silencing notifications when you are working, reading, or sleeping. By default, when you activate a Focus mode (such as “Do Not Disturb”) on your Mac, Apple automatically broadcasts this status to your contacts. If someone attempts to send you an iMessage, they will see a small note at the bottom of their screen stating, “[Your Name] has notifications silenced.”
While this is intended to politely inform your friends that you might not reply immediately, many users find it to be a severe invasion of privacy. Broadcasting exactly when you are sleeping or avoiding your computer is unnecessary information for your contacts. You can stop your Mac from sharing this status.
How to Stop Broadcasting Your Focus Status
You can turn off this global sharing feature directly from the macOS System Settings app.
- Click the Apple Logo in the top-left corner of your Mac’s screen.
- Select System Settings from the drop-down menu.
- Scroll down the left-hand navigation sidebar and click on Focus.
- In the main window, look closely under the “Share Across Devices” toggle switch. You will see an option labelled Focus Status.
- Click on Focus Status.
- A new menu will appear. At the very top, locate the toggle switch labelled Share Focus Status.
- Click the toggle switch to turn it Off.
By disabling this master switch, your Mac will immediately stop broadcasting your Do Not Disturb state to Apple’s iMessage servers. Contacts attempting to text you will no longer receive any indication that your notifications are muted; your messages will simply deliver silently, as if you were just away from your keyboard.
