Introduced in iOS 17, StandBy Mode transforms your iPhone into a smart display when it is charging and oriented horizontally (landscape). It can display large clocks, calendar widgets, weather forecasts, and even rotate through your photo albums. While visually appealing as a desk or bedside clock, it can be highly disruptive for users who prefer their screens to remain completely dark while charging overnight. Furthermore, the constant rendering of widgets and photos can generate unnecessary heat during MagSafe charging, potentially accelerating battery degradation.
This guide explains how to completely disable StandBy Mode system-wide on an iPhone to ensure the screen remains off while charging.
Disable StandBy Mode via Settings
To prevent the iOS springboard from launching the smart display overlay when the accelerometer detects a landscape orientation during charging, you must disable the feature entirely.
- Unlock your iPhone and open the main Settings app.
- Scroll down the main settings list (below the General and Display menus) until you locate StandBy. Tap on it.
- At the very top of the screen, locate the master toggle switch labelled StandBy.
- Tap the switch to toggle it to the Off (grey) position.
- (Optional) If you were only annoyed by the red tint at night but wanted to keep the clock, you could have merely disabled the “Night Mode” sub-toggle instead. But for complete deactivation, leave the master switch off.
Verify the Standard Charging Behaviour
The system responds instantly to this toggle switch, disabling the accelerometer trigger.
To verify the restriction is active, connect your iPhone to a charger (either a Lightning/USB-C cable or a wireless MagSafe puck). Lock the screen by pressing the side button. Prop the phone up in a horizontal (landscape) orientation, exactly as if it were resting on a dock. The screen will remain completely black and asleep. You have successfully prevented the iPhone from converting into a smart display, ensuring your bedside remains dark and your device charges without rendering unnecessary graphical overlays.
