How to Completely Disable the ‘Magnifier’ App on an iPhone

The Magnifier app is a built-in accessibility tool on the iPhone that utilizes the device’s camera to zoom in on small text, like physical menus or medicine bottles. It acts as a digital magnifying glass, complete with contrast and brightness filters. While incredibly useful for users with visual impairments, it is essentially a redundant camera app for the average user. If you frequently trigger the Magnifier by accident (perhaps via the triple-click side button shortcut) or simply want to declutter your App Library and Home Screen by removing unused system utilities, you can completely remove the app from your device.

This guide explains how to completely disable and remove the Magnifier app system-wide on an iPhone.

Remove the Magnifier App

Unlike core system apps like Phone or Messages, Apple allows users to completely delete the Magnifier utility from the iOS file system.

  1. Unlock your iPhone and navigate to your Home Screen or the App Library (the rightmost page of your Home Screen).
  2. Locate the Magnifier app icon (it features a magnifying glass with a plus sign inside it).
  3. Tap and hold (long press) the Magnifier app icon until a context menu appears.
  4. Tap on Remove App from the menu.
  5. A secondary confirmation prompt will appear asking if you want to remove it from the Home Screen or delete it entirely. Tap Delete App to completely uninstall it.

Verify the Complete Removal

Deleting the app not only removes the icon but also permanently breaks any accessibility shortcuts tied to it.

To verify the complete removal, pull down from the middle of the Home Screen to open Spotlight Search. Type “Magnifier” into the search bar. The app will not appear in the results (though it may show a link to re-download it from the App Store). Furthermore, go to Settings > Accessibility > Accessibility Shortcut. The option to map the Magnifier to a triple-click of the side button will be entirely gone. You have successfully purged the redundant utility from your iPhone, freeing up a small amount of storage space and decluttering your interface.
