How to Completely Disable ‘Health Data Sharing’ System-Wide on an iPhone

Apple’s iOS Health app serves as a centralized, encrypted repository for a vast array of highly sensitive biometric and medical data, including heart rate metrics, sleep analysis, blood pressure, and menstrual cycle tracking. To enhance functionality, iOS allows users to explicitly share this data with third-party applications (like fitness trackers or diet apps) and with friends, family, or healthcare providers. While this data exchange can be beneficial for personal health management, it represents a severe privacy risk in high-security, legal, or zero-trust environments. Once sensitive health data leaves the encrypted confines of the native Health app and is transmitted to a third-party server or another individual’s device, the user loses cryptographic control over its retention and potential monetization.

This guide explains how to completely disable ‘Health Data Sharing’ system-wide on an iPhone, ensuring that no biometric or medical data can be accessed by third-party apps or transmitted to external contacts.

Disable Health Data Sharing with Apps and Contacts

To enforce a strict data silo, we must revoke all existing read/write permissions granted to third-party applications and terminate any active sharing connections with other individuals directly within the Health app.

  1. Unlock the iPhone and open the native Health app.
  2. Tap on your profile picture or initials in the top right corner of the screen.
  3. Under the “Privacy” section, tap on Apps and Services.
  4. You will see a list of every application that has requested access to your health data. Tap on each application individually.
  5. For every app, tap Turn Off All to instantly revoke both read and write privileges. The app is now cryptographically blocked from interacting with the HealthKit database.
  6. Return to the main Health app dashboard and tap the Sharing tab at the bottom of the screen.
  7. If you are currently sharing data with any contacts or healthcare providers, they will be listed here. Tap on each individual’s name.
  8. Scroll to the very bottom of their profile and tap Stop Sharing. Confirm the prompt to sever the connection.

Verify the Configuration Lockdown

By executing these revocations, the iOS HealthKit framework enforces a strict read/write block against all external entities.

To verify the lockdown is active, return to the Apps and Services menu; while the apps will still be listed, selecting them will show all individual data toggles set to the “Off” (grey) position. Similarly, the Sharing tab will indicate that you are not currently sharing data with anyone. The iPhone’s Health database is now operating as a fully isolated, zero-trust encrypted vault, completely mitigating the risk of biometric data exfiltration to unauthorized third parties.
