In enterprise, industrial, or strict cellular kiosk deployments, an iPhone is often provisioned with a specific Mobile Device Management (MDM) profile and a dedicated cellular data plan. Allowing an end-user to freely toggle Cellular Data off, switch active eSIM profiles, or modify the APN settings can immediately sever the device’s connection to the corporate network. If an employee accidentally or maliciously turns off cellular data while in the field, IT administrators lose the ability to push critical updates, wipe the device remotely via Find My, or track the asset’s location.
This guide explains how to completely disable ‘Cellular Data Changes’ system-wide on an iPhone using Apple’s built-in Screen Time restrictions, cryptographically locking the network configuration and preventing the user from severing the device’s data connection.
Disable Cellular Data Changes via Screen Time
By restricting cellular modifications via Screen Time, iOS immediately greys out the Cellular Data toggle in the Settings app and prevents the addition or removal of cellular plans.
- Unlock the iPhone and open the main Settings app.
- Scroll down and tap on Screen Time.
- If you haven’t already, tap Turn On Screen Time and follow the prompts. (For maximum security, ensure you tap Use Screen Time Passcode to set a PIN that prevents unauthorized changes to this restriction).
- Tap on Content & Privacy Restrictions.
- Toggle the main Content & Privacy Restrictions switch at the top to the On (green) position.
