When you walk through a city or an airport with Wi-Fi enabled on your iPhone, the device constantly polls the environment for available networks. By default, iOS features a setting called “Ask to Join Networks,” which analyzes these broadcasted SSIDs and actively prompts you with a pop-up dialog box if it detects a known or open network it thinks you might want to connect to. While intended to save cellular data, these constant interruptions are highly annoying. More importantly, actively connecting to unknown, unencrypted open networks suggested by these prompts exposes you to Man-in-the-Middle (MitM) attacks, rogue access points, and aggressive tracking.
This guide explains how to completely disable the “Ask to Join Networks” feature system-wide on an iPhone, ensuring your device remains silent and only connects to networks you explicitly choose.
Disable Ask to Join Networks
To stop iOS from proactively analyzing environmental SSIDs and interrupting your workflow with connection prompts, you must disable the feature within the core Wi-Fi settings.
- Unlock your iPhone and open the main Settings app.
- Tap on Wi-Fi.
- Ensure the main Wi-Fi toggle is turned on (otherwise the sub-menus will be hidden).
- Scroll down below the list of available networks and locate the option labeled Ask to Join Networks.
- Tap on Ask to Join Networks.
- You will be presented with three options: “Off”, “Notify”, and “Ask”. Tap on Off.
Verify the Network Discretion
Setting this to “Off” immediately kills the prompt mechanism. Your iPhone will still passively see the networks if you manually open the Wi-Fi menu, and it will still automatically connect to your trusted, saved home or work networks. However, it will never again interrupt you with a pop-up asking if you want to join “Starbucks_Guest”.
