How to Change the Safari Tab Bar Position Between Top and Bottom on iPhone

When Apple redesigned Safari in iOS 15, they moved the address and search bar from its traditional location at the top of the screen down to the bottom. While Apple designed the bottom Tab Bar for ergonomic one-handed use on large iPhones—allowing thumbs to easily tap URLs and swipe between open tabs horizontally—many longtime iPhone users find the bottom layout disorienting and prefer the classic top address bar. iOS gives you complete freedom to switch between the modern bottom Tab Bar and the classic top Single Tab.

Bottom Tab Bar vs. Top Single Tab: Key Differences

Understanding the features of each layout helps you pick the right mode:

  • Bottom Tab Bar: Keeps the URL bar within comfortable thumb reach. Allows you to swipe left or right on the address bar to switch between open browser tabs instantaneously.
  • Top Single Tab (Classic): Pinned permanently to the top of your screen, matching the traditional desktop browser layout. The bottom edge remains dedicated strictly to navigation back/forward and share buttons.

Method 1: Change Tab Bar Position Directly Inside Safari (Fastest)

You can toggle the layout in two seconds without leaving your active webpage:

  1. Open the Safari app on your iPhone and navigate to any website.
  2. Look at the address bar:
    • If your bar is at the bottom: Tap the aA icon (or the Reader button) on the left side of the address bar.
    • From the popover menu, tap Show Top Address Bar.
    • The address bar will immediately snap to the classic top position.
  3. To revert back to the bottom: Tap the aA icon in the top address bar and select Show Bottom Tab Bar.

Method 2: Change Tab Bar Position via iOS Settings

If you prefer setting your preference globally through system menus:

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Scroll down and tap on Safari (or Apps > Safari on iOS 18+).
  3. Scroll down to the Tabs section.
  4. You will see visual preview diagrams for:
    • Tab Bar: Modern bottom floating bar.
    • Single Tab: Classic top address bar.
  5. Tap the radio button under Single Tab to keep the address bar permanently at the top.
  6. Optional: Toggle on Landscape Tab Bar if you want a desktop-style tab strip visible when holding your phone horizontally.
