How to Change Your Apple ID Email Address

Your Apple ID is arguably the most important account you own if you use an iPhone, iPad, or Mac. It holds the keys to your iCloud backups, your App Store purchases, your iMessage history, and the highly sensitive Find My device tracking.

Because many people created their Apple IDs years ago, it is common to have an embarrassing or outdated email address (like an old university email or a defunct Yahoo account) permanently attached to it. Fortunately, you do not need to create a brand new Apple ID and lose all of your purchased apps and photos just to update your email address.

Apple allows you to safely change the email address associated with your Apple ID without losing any of your data, subscriptions, or contacts.

Important Pre-Requisites Before You Begin

Before you attempt to change your Apple ID email address, you must understand a few strict rules enforced by Apple’s security systems:

• You cannot use an email address that is already in use: If the new email address you want to use is already associated with another Apple ID (even one you forgot about), the system will reject it. You must use a completely unassociated email address.
• You must have access to the new email inbox: Apple will immediately send a verification code to the new email address. You cannot complete the process without typing in that code.
• @icloud.com rules: If your current Apple ID is an @icloud.com, @me.com, or @mac.com address, you generally cannot change it to a third-party email address (like a Gmail account). You can only change it to another Apple email address alias associated with your account.

How to Change Your Apple ID Email on an iPhone or iPad

The easiest way to update your account is directly from a trusted device where you are already signed in.

1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
2. Tap on your name at the very top of the screen (where it says Apple ID, iCloud+, Media & Purchases).
3. Tap on Sign-In & Security.
4. At the top of this menu, you will see your current Email & Phone Numbers. Tap the blue Edit button in the top right corner of this section.
5. A red minus (-) icon will appear next to your current email address. Tap it, and then tap the red Delete button that slides out from the right.
6. Do not panic—your account is not deleted. The system will prompt you to Choose Another Email Address to replace it.
7. Enter the passcode you use to unlock your iPhone to verify your identity.
8. Type your new, desired email address and tap Continue.
9. Open your new email inbox on another device (or switch apps), find the verification email from Apple, and enter the verification code on your iPhone.

Once verified, the new email address instantly becomes your official Apple ID.

How to Change Your Apple ID Email via a Web Browser

If you do not have your iPhone handy, or you prefer using a physical keyboard, you can make this change from any computer.

1. Open a web browser and go to appleid.apple.com.
2. Sign in using your current (old) email address and password. You may need to enter a two-factor authentication code sent to your phone.
3. Once logged into the dashboard, click on Sign-In and Security in the left-hand menu.
4. Click on Apple ID (which will currently show your old email).
5. A box will appear allowing you to type in a Change your Apple ID field. Enter your new email address.
6. Click Change Apple ID.
7. Check your new email inbox for the verification code from Apple and enter it into the website to confirm the change.

What Happens After You Change It?

Because your email address is the core identifier for your account, changing it causes a ripple effect across all your Apple devices.

Almost immediately, every iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple TV signed into your account will pop up an alert saying there is a problem with your Apple ID and asking you to sign in again. You simply need to type your new email address along with your existing password.

You will not lose any photos, apps, or subscriptions during this process. Everything is tied to the underlying account profile, not the specific email string itself.
