If you commute to work every day, remembering to text your spouse that you have safely left the office is easy to forget. Pulling out your iPhone while driving is incredibly dangerous, and waiting until you get home defeats the purpose. Instead of relying on your memory, you can use the hidden Apple Shortcuts app to build an invisible geofence around your office. The exact second your iPhone physically leaves that zone, it will automatically draft and send a text message to anyone you choose.
How the Geofencing Engine Works
This automation uses the highly precise GPS chip inside your iPhone. You set a physical perimeter around a specific address on a map. When the phone detects that you have crossed that invisible boundary, it instantly triggers a chain reaction in the background, firing off a predefined iMessage without you ever touching the screen.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Open the Shortcuts app on your iPhone. (It comes pre-installed on all modern iPhones).
- At the very bottom of the screen, tap the Automation tab.
- In the top right corner, tap the + (plus) icon.
- Scroll down the list of triggers and select Leave.
You must now define the geofence.
- Tap the Choose button next to “Location.”
- Search for your office address (or current location). A map will appear with a blue circle. You can drag the blue dot to make the geofence wider or tighter. Tap Done.
- Under the “Time Range” section, leave it as “Any Time” (or restrict it to your specific commuting hours).
- At the bottom of the screen, select Run Immediately. This is critical. If you select “Run After Confirmation,” the automation will fail until you physically tap the screen.
- Tap Next in the top right corner.
Programming the Text Message
- Tap the massive Send Message button.
- Tap the blue word “Message” and type exactly what you want the text to say (e.g., “I just left the office. See you soon!”).
- Tap the blue word “Recipients” and select your spouse’s name from your contacts.
- Tap Done.
The automation is now live. Tomorrow, the exact moment your car pulls out of the office parking lot and crosses the invisible GPS boundary, your iPhone will silently text your spouse.
