The Favourites Bar in Apple Safari is a thin horizontal strip located just below the address bar. It allows you to click on your most-visited websites instantly without needing to open a new tab or type a web address. In the pursuit of a minimalist interface, Apple often hides this bar by default on new Macs or after major macOS updates. If you prefer utility over minimalism and want your bookmarks permanently visible at the top of your screen, you can easily reveal the Favourites Bar.
How to Show the Favourites Bar
Bringing back the Favourites Bar is incredibly simple and requires only two clicks within the Safari menu.
- Open the Safari browser on your Mac.
- Look up at the Mac menu bar at the very top of your screen and click on the View tab.
- In the drop-down menu that appears, locate and click on Show Favorites Bar.
Alternatively, if you prefer keyboard shortcuts, you can toggle the Favourites Bar on and off at any time by pressing Command (⌘) + Shift + B simultaneously.
How to Manage Your Favourites Bar
Once the bar is visible, you might find it populated with default Apple bookmarks or completely empty. Customising it to suit your workflow is very intuitive.
- To add a new website: Navigate to the website you want to save. Click and hold the URL in the address bar, then drag it straight down onto the Favourites Bar and release your mouse.
- To remove a website: Click and hold the bookmark on the Favourites Bar, drag it off the bar until you see a small ‘poof’ cloud icon, and release your mouse. You can also simply right-click the bookmark and select ‘Delete’.
- To rearrange: Click and hold any bookmark on the bar, then drag it left or right to change its order.
