Accidentally deleting an important Pages document, family photo, or contact card on your iPhone or Mac can cause immediate panic. Fortunately, Apple provides a robust cloud safety net. Even if you empty the local Recently Deleted folder on your device or accidentally overwrite synchronized data, iCloud preserves deleted items and earlier snapshots on its servers for up to 30 days via iCloud.com.
What Can You Recover on iCloud.com?
The web-based data recovery centre on iCloud.com can restore several critical categories of synchronized data that may have disappeared from your local devices:
- iCloud Drive Files: Documents, spreadsheets, PDFs, and archives deleted from the Files app or Finder within the last 30 days.
- Contacts Archives: Reverts your entire Contacts database to an earlier automated cloud backup without losing local device access.
- Calendars and Reminders: Restores deleted calendar schedules and task lists, automatically re-sending invitations to attendees.
- Safari Bookmarks: Reinstates accidentally deleted reading lists and browser bookmark folders across all synchronized Apple devices.
How to Recover Deleted Files on iCloud.com
If you deleted a file from iCloud Drive or the iOS Files app, follow these steps from any desktop web browser:
- Open a browser and navigate to iCloud.com.
- Sign in with your Apple ID and complete the two-factor authentication prompt.
- Click the grid icon (app launcher) in the top-right corner of the dashboard and select Data Recovery (or scroll to the bottom of the home page and click Data Recovery).
- Click on Restore Files.
- A window will populate displaying all files deleted within the last 30 days, along with their original folder paths and days remaining until permanent deletion.
- Tick the checkboxes beside the specific files you need, or click Select All.
- Click Restore in the bottom-right corner. The restored files will automatically resynchronize back into your original iCloud Drive folders on your Mac, iPad, and iPhone.
How to Restore Contacts, Calendars, and Safari Bookmarks
Unlike individual files, contacts and calendar events are restored in snapshots taken prior to major modifications or sync events.
- In the Data Recovery menu on iCloud.com, select Restore Contacts, Restore Calendars, or Restore Bookmarks.
- Browse through the available archive snapshots, which are sorted chronologically by date and time.
- Click Restore next to the archive date that predates your accidental deletion.
- Confirm the prompt. iCloud will replace the current contact or calendar database on all your signed-in devices with the selected archive.
- Note: iCloud automatically creates a fresh backup snapshot of your current data right before applying the restoration, so you can always undo the restore if needed.
Important Recovery Limitations to Keep in Mind
Apple holds deleted items in the cloud recovery queue for strictly 30 days. Once the 30-day window expires, deleted files and database archives are permanently purged from iCloud servers and cannot be recovered by Apple Support. For crucial documents, maintaining an offline Time Machine backup or external hard drive copy remains a best practice.
