The Security Flaw
The Control Center on an iPhone is accessed by swiping down from the top-right corner of the screen. By default, Apple allows anyone to access this menu even when the phone is completely locked and protected by a PIN code. While this makes it easy to quickly turn on the flashlight or skip a song, it introduces a massive security vulnerability. If a thief steals your locked iPhone, the very first thing they will do is swipe down and tap the “Airplane Mode” button in the Control Center. This instantly disconnects the phone from the cellular network, completely disabling the “Find My iPhone” tracking feature before you even realize the device is missing. You must lock this menu down.
How to Turn Off Control Center on the Lock Screen
You can revoke the lock screen’s permission to open the menu via the security settings.
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Scroll down and tap on Face ID & Passcode (or Touch ID & Passcode).
- Enter your 6-digit PIN code to access the secure menu.
- Scroll down to the section labeled “Allow Access When Locked.”
- Look for the toggle switch labeled Control Center.
- Toggle this switch to the Off position (the green background will disappear).
The Locked Interface
The change is instantaneous. If you lock your iPhone and attempt to swipe down from the top-right corner, absolutely nothing will happen. The only way to access Airplane Mode, Wi-Fi toggles, or the flashlight is to first authenticate with your face or type your passcode, ensuring a thief cannot easily take your device offline.
