How to Disable USB Accessories on the iPhone Lock Screen

The Hardware Exploitation Vector

By default, iOS allows external hardware (like specialized keyboards, audio interfaces, or data transfer cables) to interface with the iPhone’s Lightning or USB-C port while the device is locked, provided it was unlocked recently. While this allows you to plug the phone into a car stereo without unlocking it, it is a catastrophic physical security vulnerability. Malicious actors, law enforcement agencies, and specialized forensic extraction tools (like GrayKey or Cellebrite) exploit this open data bridge. They plug specialized hardware into the charging port and barrage the operating system with exploits to bypass the Lock Screen. You must permanently sever the data connection to the physical port.

How to Disable USB Accessories on the Lock Screen

You can permanently secure your physical charging port via the Face ID & Passcode settings.

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Scroll down and tap on Face ID & Passcode (or Touch ID & Passcode).
  3. Enter your strict device passcode to authenticate.
  4. Scroll down to the section labeled “Allow Access When Locked.”
  5. Locate the toggle switch labeled Accessories (or USB Accessories on older iOS versions).
  6. Toggle this switch to the Off position (the green background will disappear).

A Hardened Physical Perimeter

The change takes effect instantly. The iPhone will completely sever the data-transfer pins on the physical charging port when the device has been locked for more than one hour (or immediately, depending on the exact security state). You can now leave your phone unattended; if a forensic extraction device is plugged in, the operating system will treat it as a “dumb” charger, accepting electrical current but absolutely refusing to load the USB data drivers. To mount external hardware, you are now strictly required to unlock the phone with Face ID first, guaranteeing absolute cryptographic defense against physical hacking tools.
