How to Disable Smart Stack Rotation on Apple Watch

The Widget Override

Apple Watch features a widget system known as the “Smart Stack.” By default, if you are looking at your standard watch face and you physically scroll the Digital Crown upwards, the watch face slides away and reveals a stack of dynamic widgets (weather, calendar, activity rings). While this provides quick access to information, it fundamentally changes how the crown behaves. If you are accustomed to spinning the crown purely to wake the screen or to clear notifications, suddenly having a massive widget board take over your screen is highly jarring and often happens by accident when a sleeve catches the dial. You must disable the crown shortcut.

How to Turn Off Smart Stack Rotation

You can force the Digital Crown to ignore the Smart Stack via the Display settings.

  1. Open the Settings app directly on your Apple Watch (the grey gear icon).
  2. Scroll down the main list and tap on Display & Brightness.
  3. Scroll down until you locate the section governing the crown behavior.
  4. Locate the toggle switch labeled Auto-Launch Smart Stack (or “Rotate Crown to Wake/Show Widgets” depending on your exact watchOS version).
  5. Toggle this switch to the Off position.

A Static Watch Face

The change is instantaneous. The Apple Watch will completely sever the connection between the physical rotation of the Digital Crown and the widget board engine. While sitting on the main watch face, you can spin the crown as much as you want; the screen will remain perfectly still, showing only the time. (Note: You can still access the Smart Stack manually by swiping up from the very bottom edge of the glass).
