How to Disable “Shake to Undo” on iPhone

The Accidental Erasure

Because the iPhone lacks a physical keyboard with a dedicated “Ctrl+Z” shortcut, Apple implemented a gesture-based undo system. By default, if you are typing a long email or text message and you violently shake the physical phone back and forth, the operating system will throw a pop-up prompt asking, “Undo Typing?” While this is a clever way to recover deleted text, it is highly problematic for users who commute. If you are typing a message while riding on a bumpy train or walking down the stairs, the phone will misinterpret the turbulence as a deliberate shake, constantly interrupting your typing with the undo prompt. You must completely disable the gesture.

How to Turn Off Shake to Undo

You can permanently sever the text editor’s connection to the accelerometer via the Accessibility settings.

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Scroll down and tap on Accessibility.
  3. Under the “Physical and Motor” section, tap on Touch.
  4. Scroll down the page and look for the toggle switch labeled Shake to Undo.
  5. Toggle this switch to the Off position (the green background will disappear).

A Stable Keyboard

The change takes effect instantly. The iPhone will completely ignore all physical motion while you are using the keyboard. You can type while running, riding a bicycle, or sitting in a vibrating vehicle, and the undo prompt will never again interrupt your workflow. (Note: To undo typing without this feature, you can simply swipe left with three fingers across the screen).
