How to Disable the Raise to Wake Feature on iPhone

The Accidental Illumination Vector

Modern iPhones feature a deeply integrated accelerometer function known as Raise to Wake. By default, any physical movement that lifts the device upwards—such as pulling it out of a pocket, picking it up off a desk, or even jostling it while holding it in your hand—forces the screen to instantly turn on. While convenient for checking the time, this hyper-sensitive trigger frequently results in the screen illuminating constantly when you are simply walking, significantly draining the battery over the course of a day.

How to Disable Raise to Wake

You can instruct the iPhone’s hardware sensors to completely ignore physical lifting, ensuring the screen remains pitch black until you deliberately interact with it.

1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
2. Scroll down the main list and tap on Display & Brightness.
3. Scroll down to the middle of this menu.
4. Locate the toggle switch labelled Raise to Wake.
5. Tap the toggle to switch it to the Off position (the switch will turn grey).

Your iPhone will no longer illuminate based on physical movement. To wake the screen, you must now explicitly tap the glass surface or press the physical power button on the side of the device, granting you total control over power consumption.
