How to Stop New iPhone Apps from Hiding in the App Library

The Disappearing App Frustration

When Apple introduced the App Library (the heavily organized folder page located at the very end of your Home Screen pages), they fundamentally changed how app installations work. By default, when you download a brand new game or productivity tool from the App Store, the icon no longer appears on your main Home Screen. Instead, iOS silently hides the new app deep inside one of the automatically generated App Library folders. If you download an app in a rush, finding it later can be incredibly frustrating. If you prefer the classic iPhone behavior—where every single new app is instantly placed directly on your desktop—you must change the default download routing.

How to Route New Apps to the Home Screen

You can force iOS to abandon the App Library routing via the main settings menu.

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Scroll down the main list until you find Home Screen & App Library. Tap it.
  3. At the very top of the page, look at the “Newly Downloaded Apps” section.
  4. You will see two choices: “Add to Home Screen” and “App Library Only.”
  5. Tap Add to Home Screen to place a blue checkmark next to it.

The Classic Experience Restored

The change takes effect immediately. The next time you download an application from the App Store, you can simply close the store and swipe to your last active Home Screen page. The new application icon will be sitting right there, waiting for you to tap it or drag it into your own custom folder. (Note: The App Library still exists, and you can still swipe to the end to view it, but it will no longer intercept your new downloads).
