How to Disable Live Text (OCR) Globally on iPhone

The Background OCR Engine

Apple includes a powerful feature on modern iPhones known as “Live Text.” By default, whenever you open the Camera app, view a picture in your Photos library, or pause a video, the iOS operating system runs a background Optical Character Recognition (OCR) algorithm. It silently scans the image for text, phone numbers, and translation opportunities, highlighting them in yellow. While technologically impressive, this constant background image analysis consumes massive amounts of battery and CPU power. If you rarely need to copy text from photos and prefer maximum device performance, you must kill this daemon.

How to Turn Off Live Text

You can permanently sever the background OCR engine via the Language & Region settings.

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Scroll down and tap on General.
  3. Tap on Language & Region.
  4. Scroll down to the bottom of the screen.
  5. Locate the master toggle switch labeled Live Text.
  6. Toggle this switch to the Off position (the green background will disappear).

Raw Image Rendering

The change takes effect instantly. The iPhone will completely terminate the background neural engine daemon responsible for analyzing pixels for alphabetical patterns. You can now open your Camera app and point it directly at a dense wall of text, and the operating system will absolutely refuse to spawn the yellow highlight brackets or offer translation options. Your Photos app will treat images purely as raw pixels, guaranteeing a significantly faster, more responsive, and less battery-intensive viewing experience.
