The False Alarms
The Apple Watch features an incredibly sophisticated accelerometer designed to detect sudden impacts. If it registers a severe change in trajectory followed by absolute stillness, it assumes you have taken a hard fall. If you don’t dismiss the on-screen alert within one minute, the watch will automatically call emergency services and broadcast your GPS coordinates. While this is a brilliant, life-saving feature for the elderly, it is highly problematic for extreme sports athletes. If you are constantly tackling people in rugby, crashing your mountain bike into dirt berms, or riding aggressive rollercoasters, the watch will trigger massive false alarms. If you participate in high-impact activities, you must disable the sensors.
How to Turn Off Fall Detection
You can completely disable the emergency SOS trigger via the watch settings.
- Open the Settings app directly on your Apple Watch (the grey gear icon).
- Scroll down the main list and tap on SOS.
- Tap on Fall Detection.
- You will see a master toggle switch labeled Fall Detection.
- Toggle this switch to the Off position (the green background will disappear).
- A warning prompt will appear. Tap Turn Off to confirm.
Impact Ignored
The change takes effect immediately. You can now engage in high-impact sports or ride wooden rollercoasters without fear. The Apple Watch will completely ignore sudden G-force changes and hard impacts, ensuring you never accidentally dispatch an ambulance to your location during a recreational activity.
