How to Disable the “Cover to Mute” Feature on Apple Watch

The Accidental Silencer

The Apple Watch features a unique physical gesture called “Cover to Mute.” By default, if your watch starts ringing with an incoming phone call or blaring a loud timer, you can instantly silence it by physically covering the entire watch screen with the palm of your opposite hand for three seconds. While this is a clever use of the ambient light sensor and capacitive touch screen, it is highly prone to accidental triggers. If you cross your arms tightly, sleep with your hand resting over your wrist, or wear a tight jacket cuff, you can unknowingly trigger the mute gesture, causing you to miss critical alarms. You must completely disable the palm sensor.

How to Turn Off Cover to Mute

You can permanently sever the connection between the screen sensors and the audio engine via the Sound settings.

  1. Open the Settings app directly on your Apple Watch (the grey gear icon).
  2. Scroll down the main list and tap on Sounds & Haptics.
  3. Scroll down past the volume slider and haptic controls.
  4. Locate the master toggle switch labeled Cover to Mute.
  5. Toggle this switch to the Off position (the green background will disappear).

Reliable Alarms

The change is instantaneous. The Apple Watch will completely terminate the background gesture recognition daemon responsible for monitoring the full-screen touch array. The next time a timer goes off, you can slap the screen, cover it with a heavy jacket, or sleep on your arm, and the watch will continue ringing at full volume. You must now intentionally tap the “Stop” button on the screen or press the Digital Crown to silence audio, ensuring your alarms are completely reliable and immune to accidental physical muting.
