The Hourly Interruption
The Apple Watch features a niche accessibility setting called “Chimes.” When enabled, the watch will emit a sharp bell sound or a series of chirping bird noises exactly at the top of every hour (or half-hour). While this is a useful auditory cue for keeping track of time without looking at your wrist, it is incredibly disruptive in quiet environments like libraries, classrooms, or during intense meetings. If you demand absolute silence from your wrist unless you are receiving a critical phone call, you must disable the hourly clock chime.
How to Turn Off Hourly Chimes
You can permanently silence the automated clock sounds via the Accessibility settings.
- Open the Settings app directly on your Apple Watch (the grey gear icon).
- Scroll down the main list and tap on Accessibility.
- Scroll down to the “Vision” section and tap on Chimes.
- Locate the master toggle switch labeled Chimes.
- Toggle this switch to the Off position (the green background will disappear).
Absolute Silence
The change is instantaneous. The Apple Watch will completely terminate the background chronometer daemon responsible for triggering the hourly audio files. The next time the clock strikes noon, your wrist will remain completely silent and perfectly still. The watch will now only make noise when explicitly commanded to by an alarm, a timer, or a direct notification, restoring complete acoustic discipline to your wearable.
