The Inconvenient Update
By default, the Apple Watch is configured to update its operating system (watchOS) automatically. When Apple releases a new patch, the watch will quietly download the massive file in the background. Then, if the watch is resting on its magnetic charger during the night and has at least a 50% battery charge, it will initiate the installation process on its own. While this ensures your device is always running the latest security patches, it can be highly inconvenient. Operating system updates can occasionally introduce massive battery drain bugs or alter the user interface in ways you dislike. If you prefer to read the release notes on the internet first and update your device strictly on your own schedule, you must turn off the automation.
How to Turn Off Automatic OS Updates
You can revoke the watch’s permission to install software from the companion app on your paired iPhone.
- Open the Watch app on your iPhone.
- Ensure you are on the My Watch tab at the bottom left of the screen.
- Scroll down the main list and tap on General.
- Tap on Software Update.
- Tap on Automatic Updates.
- You will see a toggle switch labeled Automatically Install.
- Toggle this switch to the Off position (the green background will disappear).
Manual Control
The change takes effect immediately. The Apple Watch may still download the update file in the background to save time, but it will never reboot and install the software without your explicit permission. When you are finally ready to apply the patch, you must return to this exact menu on your iPhone and tap the manual “Install Now” button.
