MacBook trackpads are famous for their extensive library of multi-touch gestures. One of the most prominent is “App Exposé.” By default, if you place three or four fingers on your trackpad and swipe downwards, macOS instantly hides all other windows on your screen and scatters every open window of your currently active application so you can see them all at once. For example, swiping down while using Safari will show you every single Safari window you have open, side-by-side.
While this is visually impressive, it can be a massive annoyance for users with large hands or erratic typing habits. It is incredibly easy to accidentally brush the trackpad with a few fingers while reaching for the keyboard, triggering the animation and violently throwing your active window out of focus. If you prefer to manage your windows using the keyboard (like Cmd + Tilde) rather than sweeping gestures, you should disable App Exposé to prevent these accidental misfires.
Disabling the App Exposé Gesture in Trackpad Settings
You can turn off this specific downward swipe gesture directly from the main Trackpad settings menu without disabling your other essential gestures (like scrolling or desktop switching).
- Click the Apple Logo in the absolute top-left corner of your Mac’s screen.
- Select System Settings… from the dropdown menu (or “System Preferences” if you are running an older version of macOS).
- Scroll down the left-hand sidebar and click on Trackpad (usually near the bottom).
- In the main Trackpad panel, look at the tabs across the top and click on More Gestures.
- Look down the list of options for the setting labelled App Exposé. (It will likely be set to “Swipe down with four fingers” or “Swipe down with three fingers”).
- Click the dropdown menu next to it.
- Select Off from the list of options.
The change takes effect instantly. You can test it right away by aggressively swiping down on your trackpad with four fingers. Nothing will happen, and your current window will remain firmly locked in focus, ensuring your typing and workflow are never accidentally interrupted again.
