Apple’s iOS allows users to reply to incoming text messages and iMessages directly from the Lock Screen. When a notification arrives, you can long-press (or swipe and tap “Reply”) to type out a response without ever unlocking the device. While this offers exceptional convenience, it is a glaring security vulnerability. If your iPhone is left unattended on a desk, anyone who physically possesses the device can read your incoming messages and, worse, reply to your contacts impersonating you, all without needing your Face ID or passcode.

Disable Lock Screen Replies via Settings
To secure your messaging apps, we must explicitly revoke the system’s permission to execute the reply API while the device is in a locked state.
- Unlock your iPhone and open the main Settings app.
- Scroll down and tap on Face ID & Passcode (or “Touch ID & Passcode” on older models).
- You will be prompted to enter your current numeric passcode to access this sensitive menu. Enter it now.
- Scroll down significantly to the section labelled Allow Access When Locked.
- This section contains a list of features available without authentication. Locate the toggle named Reply with Message.
- Tap the switch to toggle it to the Off (grey) position.
Verify the Communication Lockdown
This configuration change takes effect immediately, blocking the specific API that allows the keyboard to launch over the Lock Screen.
To verify the lockdown is successful, lock your iPhone by pressing the side button. Have a friend send you a text message.
