Introduced as part of the iCloud+ subscription, iCloud Private Relay is Apple’s privacy-focused network routing service. Deeply integrated into macOS Sequoia and iOS, Private Relay intercepts your Safari web traffic and DNS requests, encrypts them, and bounces them through two separate internet relays. This prevents anyone—including your ISP, local network administrators, and even Apple itself—from simultaneously knowing your identity (IP address) and your browsing destination.
While an excellent tool for consumer privacy on public Wi-Fi, Private Relay can wreak havoc in specific networking environments. In corporate offices, universities, or households utilizing DNS-based ad-blocking (like Pi-hole or AdGuard Home), Private Relay actively circumvents local network policies. Furthermore, because it masks your geographic IP address, it can trigger anti-fraud mechanisms on banking websites or break region-locked streaming services. If you need your Mac to communicate directly and transparently with your local network gateway, you must disable iCloud Private Relay.
Why Disable iCloud Private Relay?
System administrators and power users often disable Private Relay for the following reasons:
- Local DNS Resolution: Private Relay encrypts DNS requests, completely bypassing local DNS servers used for ad-blocking, parental controls, or resolving internal corporate hostnames.
- Network Speed and Latency: Routing traffic through two additional remote servers inevitably introduces latency. Disabling the feature ensures maximum throughput for online gaming or large file transfers.
- Geolocation Issues: Some websites and regional services require an accurate IP address to function correctly and will outright block traffic originating from Apple’s relay servers.
How to Turn Off ‘Private Relay’ in macOS Sequoia
You can globally disable iCloud Private Relay for your entire Mac through the System Settings application.
- Click the Apple Logo in the top-left corner of your screen and select System Settings.
- Click on your Apple Account Name (your profile picture) at the very top of the left-hand sidebar.
- In the main window, click on iCloud.
- Scroll down to the “iCloud+” section and click on Private Relay.
- Click the Turn Off… button.
- A confirmation prompt will appear. Select Turn Off Private Relay to confirm your decision.
Once disabled, macOS Sequoia will immediately stop routing your Safari traffic through Apple’s proxy network. Your Mac will revert to using the standard DNS servers and routing protocols provided by your local router or ISP, restoring full compatibility with local network services.
