How to Change the Default Notification Sound and Haptic Alert on iPhone

For many years, one of the most persistent limitations of iOS was the inability to customise the global notification sound used by third-party applications. Apps that did not supply their own custom alert chimes defaulted to Apple’s system tone. When Apple introduced iOS 17, it replaced the iconic, audible “Tri-tone” with a softer, subtler chime called “Rebound.” For many users, this quieter chime resulted in missed notifications, overlooked reminders, and difficulty distinguishing incoming alerts in noisy environments.

In response to overwhelming user feedback, Apple introduced a dedicated “Default Alerts” configuration menu in iOS. This setting allows iPhone users to select any system alert tone, purchased ringtone, or custom sound for third-party notifications, as well as customize associated haptic vibration patterns. Navigating to Default Alerts in iOS Settings

To access the system-wide notification sound settings, ensure your iPhone is running iOS 17.2 or later (including iOS 18), then follow these steps:

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap on Sounds & Haptics.
  3. Scroll down to the Sounds and Haptic Patterns section.
  4. Locate and tap on Default Alerts.

This menu controls the alert tone and vibration behaviour for all incoming notifications from third-party apps that do not declare proprietary sounds (such as social networks, banking apps, and task managers).

Selecting a New Notification Alert Tone

Inside the Default Alerts menu, iOS presents an extensive catalogue of audio choices:

  1. Browse through the list of modern alert sounds. Tapping any sound plays an instant audio preview.
  2. To restore the classic sound familiar from previous iOS versions, tap Classic at the bottom of the list and select Tri-tone.
  3. If you prefer punchier or higher-pitched chimes that cut through ambient background noise, test options like Chirp, Note, Aurora, or Telegraph.
  4. Once you tap your preferred tone, a blue tick appears adjacent to it, confirming your selection.

Customising Associated Haptic Vibration Feedback

Sound is only half of the notification experience. You can also tailor the physical vibration motor to ensure you never miss alerts when your iPhone is placed on Silent mode or kept in your pocket:

  1. At the very top of the Default Alerts screen, tap on Haptics.
  2. Choose from standard Apple vibration rhythms such as Accent, Alert, Heartbeat, Quick, or Rapid.
  3. Alternatively, tap Create New Vibration to record a bespoke haptic pattern by tapping your finger rhythmically on the display screen. Tap Stop, preview your rhythm, and tap Save to assign it.
  4. If you prefer silent notifications without any physical buzz, scroll down and select None.

Managing App-Specific Notification Overrides

While Default Alerts handles general third-party applications, built-in Apple apps maintain independent sound menus. To adjust specific services:

  • Messages: Return to Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Text Tone to assign a distinct chime specifically for SMS and iMessage threads.
  • Mail: Navigate to Settings > Sounds & Haptics > New Mail or configure per-account VIP sounds.
  • Third-Party In-App Audio: Certain applications (such as WhatsApp, Slack, or Microsoft Teams) provide internal sound pickers inside their own in-app settings menus that take precedence over the global iOS default alert tone.
