How to Stop Your Mac from Automatically Opening Apple Music

The Bluetooth Headphone Interruption

macOS includes a deeply ingrained continuity feature designed to predict your actions. Often, when you connect a pair of Bluetooth headphones, press the “Play/Pause” button on your keyboard, or even wake your Mac from sleep with headphones attached, the operating system assumes you want to listen to music. In response, it automatically launches the Apple Music app (formerly iTunes). This can be incredibly frustrating if you use Spotify, if you are connecting your headset to jump into a Zoom meeting, or if you simply prefer a quiet workspace. Instead of getting to work, you are forced to wait for Apple Music to load, bounce in the dock, and then manually quit the application.

How to Stop Apple Music Auto-Launch via Third-Party Tools

Unfortunately, Apple does not provide a simple toggle switch in System Settings to disable this specific behavior. The Mac kernel hardcodes the “Play” media key and Bluetooth audio connection events to trigger Apple Music if no other media player is currently active. The most reliable way to intercept and block this command is by using a lightweight, open-source utility called “noTunes.”

1. Open your web browser and navigate to the official GitHub repository for noTunes (search “noTunes GitHub” to find the latest release).

2. Download the `noTunes.zip` file from the Releases page.

3. Extract the ZIP file and drag the noTunes.app into your Mac’s Applications folder.

4. Double-click the app to launch it. Because it is downloaded from the internet, you may need to right-click it, select “Open,” and confirm the security prompt.

5. Once running, noTunes will appear as a small icon in your top Menu Bar (it looks like a musical note with a strikethrough).

While noTunes is running, it actively listens for the specific system command that tells Apple Music to launch, and it silently intercepts and kills that command. Pressing the Play button or connecting headphones will no longer launch the app.

How to Run noTunes on Startup

To ensure you never have to deal with Apple Music opening automatically again, you should configure noTunes to launch silently in the background every time you turn on your Mac.

1. Click the Apple logo () in the top-left corner.

2. Select System Settings.

3. Navigate to General > Login Items.

4. Under the “Open at Login” list, click the (+) Plus button.

5. Navigate to your Applications folder, select noTunes.app, and click Open.

The utility will now protect your Mac from unwanted Apple Music interruptions permanently.
