The Scroll to Text Fragment Feature
When you click on a search result in Google, you might notice that Chrome automatically jumps halfway down the webpage and highlights your specific search term in bright yellow. This feature, known as “Scroll to Text Fragment,” is designed to help you quickly locate the relevant information on a long page. However, many users find the forced scrolling disorienting and the bright yellow highlights distracting, preferring to land at the top of the page and read the context naturally.
How to Disable the Highlighting Feature
Because this feature is deeply integrated into Chrome’s rendering engine, there is no standard toggle switch in the settings menu. Instead, you must use a Chrome “flag” to disable it.
1. Open Google Chrome.
2. Click in the address bar at the top, type chrome://flags, and press Enter.
3. You will see a warning that these are experimental features. In the search box at the very top of the page, type Scroll to Text Fragment.
4. The specific flag should appear in the list below. Next to it, you will see a drop-down menu that is likely set to “Default.”
5. Click the drop-down menu and change the setting to Disabled.
Applying the Changes
Changing a core browser flag requires a full restart of the application. Once you select “Disabled,” a blue Relaunch button will appear at the bottom right corner of the window. Click it to restart Chrome. From now on, clicking a Google search result will load the webpage normally, starting from the very top, with no forced scrolling and no yellow highlights applied to the text.
