How to Set Up a Custom Medication Reminder Schedule in Apple Health on iOS

Managing daily medications, vitamins, and supplements can be complicated, especially if you have to take multiple pills at different times of the day. The Apple Health app on iOS includes a comprehensive Medications feature that allows you to log your prescriptions, set custom reminder schedules, and track your adherence without needing a third-party app.

Why Use Apple Health for Medications?

Apple Health provides a secure, encrypted environment for your medical data. Unlike many free medication tracker apps, Apple does not sell your health data to advertisers. Furthermore, the feature integrates deeply with iOS and the Apple Watch, delivering interactive notifications that allow you to quickly log a medication as “Taken” directly from your Lock Screen or wrist.

Step 1: Add a Medication to Apple Health

Before you can set a reminder schedule, you must first add the specific medication to your profile.

  1. Open the Health app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap on the Browse tab at the bottom right of the screen.
  3. Scroll down and select Medications from the list of health categories.
  4. Tap Add a Medication.
  5. Type the name of the medication or supplement in the search bar. If you are in the US, you can also use your camera to scan the label.
  6. Select the correct match from the list, or choose to add it as a custom entry.
  7. Select the medication type (e.g., Capsule, Tablet, Liquid) and the strength (e.g., 500 mg).
  8. Tap Next.

Step 2: Configure the Custom Reminder Schedule

After adding the medication details, the app will prompt you to configure when you need to take it.

  1. Under the “When will you take this?” section, tap on Frequency.
  2. You can choose predefined options like “Every Day” or “Every Other Day”, or select Custom to pick specific days of the week.
  3. Once the frequency is set, tap Add a time.
  4. Use the scroll wheel to set the exact time you need to take the dose.
  5. If you take the medication multiple times a day, tap Add a time again to add a second or third dose interval.
  6. Tap Next.

Step 3: Customise the Visual Appearance

To help you easily identify the medication in your list, iOS allows you to customize its icon.

  1. Choose the shape that best matches your pill or bottle.
  2. Select the colour for the left side and the right side of the icon to match the actual medication.
  3. Tap Next, review your details, and then tap Done to save the schedule.

Your iPhone will now send you timely notifications according to the schedule you created, helping you maintain a consistent and healthy medication routine.
