How to Enable the Touch Keyboard in Windows 11

While most modern laptops feature excellent physical keyboards, there are times when you might need to use an on-screen Touch Keyboard instead. If you own a 2-in-1 device and are using it in tablet mode, or if your physical keyboard suddenly stops working, the Windows 11 Touch Keyboard is an essential lifesaver.

Unlike the traditional “On-Screen Keyboard” accessibility tool designed for mice, the modern Touch Keyboard in Windows 11 is optimized for fingertips, supports swipe-to-type, and even includes a dedicated emoji panel.

How to Enable the Touch Keyboard Icon

The easiest way to access the Touch Keyboard is to pin its shortcut permanently to your system tray (the bottom right corner of your screen, next to the clock).

  1. Right-click anywhere on an empty space on your Windows 11 taskbar.
  2. Select Taskbar settings from the small context menu.
  3. In the Settings window that opens, scroll down and look for the System tray icons section.
  4. Find the toggle switch labeled Touch keyboard.
  5. Change the dropdown menu from “Never” to Always (or “When no keyboard attached” if you only want it to appear when in tablet mode).

A small keyboard icon will instantly appear in the bottom right corner of your taskbar. Whenever you need to type, simply tap or click that icon, and the modern Touch Keyboard will slide up from the bottom of your screen.

Customizing the Keyboard

Once the keyboard is on your screen, you can customize it by tapping the small gear icon in the top left corner of the keyboard itself. From there, you can change the layout (e.g., splitting it in half for easier thumb typing on a tablet), change the theme and colors, or adjust the size of the keys to perfectly match your screen and fingers.
