How to Use the Hidden Field Test Mode on Your iPhone

By understanding your dBm reading, you can accurately determine if your signal issues are caused by your physical location, carrier network congestion, or a hardware problem with the iPhone itself. The number displayed next to RSRP is your true cellular signal strength. It will always be a negative number.

  • -80 dBm to -89 dBm: A very good, reliable signal.
  • -90 dBm to -99 dBm: An average signal. You may experience slightly slower data speeds, but calls should remain stable.
  • -100 dBm to -109 dBm: A poor signal. Data speeds will be noticeably slow, and calls may occasionally drop.
  • -110 dBm to -120 dBm: A very weak signal. You are on the edge of a dead zone, and a reliable connection is unlikely.

Limitations of Field Test Mode

While Field Test Mode is a powerful diagnostic tool, the numbers do not update in real-time. If you are walking around your house trying to find the best signal, you must wait several seconds in each location for the RSRP value to refresh. Furthermore, Apple frequently changes the interface of this app with major iOS updates, meaning the exact location of the RSRP metric may move in the future.
