If you download a massive video game, a Linux operating system installer, or a large enterprise software package from the internet, it will almost always arrive as a single .iso file. Historically, handling these files was a miserable experience. You had to download sketchy, adware-filled third-party software (like Daemon Tools) or physically burn the file to a blank DVD disc just to access the contents. Fortunately, modern computing has evolved. Windows 11 features a powerful, built-in virtual drive emulator that allows you to instantly “mount” an ISO file directly from your desktop, treating it exactly like a physical disc.
How to Mount the ISO File
The entire process takes less than two seconds and requires absolutely no third-party applications.
- Open the File Explorer (the yellow folder icon on your taskbar) and navigate to the folder where your downloaded
.isofile is located (usually your Downloads folder). - Right-click directly on the ISO file icon.
- In the modern drop-down menu that appears, click the word Mount located near the very top.
Accessing the Virtual Drive
The screen will flash briefly, and a brand-new File Explorer window will instantly open. Windows has essentially created a “fake” DVD drive inside your computer and inserted the digital disc.
You can now browse through all the internal folders, read the text documents, or double-click the setup.exe file to begin installing the software, exactly as if you were reading from a physical piece of plastic.
How to Unmount (Eject) the File
When you are completely finished installing the software, you should not leave the virtual drive mounted permanently, as it can occasionally confuse backup software.
- Open This PC in the File Explorer.
- Look under the “Devices and drives” section. You will see a new drive letter (e.g., DVD Drive (D:)) that was not there yesterday.
- Right-click on this virtual drive.
- Select Eject from the drop-down menu.
The virtual drive will instantly vanish from your computer, safely unmounting the ISO file without deleting the original download.
