How to Share Wi-Fi Passwords from iPhone to Another Device Automatically

When friends or family visit your home, the first question they usually ask is for the Wi-Fi password. Digging out the router or trying to remember a complex, 16-character string of random letters and numbers is a frustrating experience. Fortunately, if both you and your guest use Apple devices, iOS features a built-in tool that allows you to share your Wi-Fi password securely with a single tap, completely bypassing the need to type it out.

Requirements for Wi-Fi Password Sharing

Apple designed this feature with security in mind, meaning it will not simply broadcast your password to any iPhone that walks into your house. Several conditions must be met before the feature will activate:

  • Both devices must be Apple products: This feature works between iPhones, iPads, and Mac computers. It does not work if your guest is using an Android or Windows device.
  • Software updates: Ensure both devices are updated to the latest version of iOS, iPadOS, or macOS.
  • Wi-Fi and Bluetooth: Both devices must have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth turned on.
  • Personal Hotspot: If either device has Personal Hotspot actively running, turn it off temporarily.
  • Contacts are required: This is the most critical security step. You (the host) must have your guest’s Apple ID email address saved in your Contacts app. Similarly, your guest must have your Apple ID email address saved in their Contacts app. If you are not mutual contacts, the prompt will never appear.

How to Share the Wi-Fi Password

Once you have verified that the requirements above are met, the sharing process is virtually automatic.

  1. The Host: Ensure your iPhone (the device that already knows the password) is unlocked, connected to the Wi-Fi network you want to share, and physically close to your guest’s device.
  2. The Guest: Ask your guest to open their Settings app, tap Wi-Fi, and select your Wi-Fi network from the list as if they were going to type the password manually.
  3. The Prompt: As soon as the guest selects your network, a card will slide up on your (the host’s) iPhone screen. It will say “Do you want to share the Wi-Fi password for [Network Name] with [Guest’s Name]?”
  4. Confirm: Tap the Share Password button on your screen.

The password will be securely transmitted over Bluetooth and automatically populate the password field on your guest’s device. They will be connected to the network instantly, and you will see a “Done” confirmation on your screen.

Troubleshooting: Why Isn’t the Prompt Appearing?

If your guest selects the network and your phone does not react, run through this quick checklist:

  • Bring the devices physically closer together (within Bluetooth range, ideally right next to each other).
  • Lock your iPhone, unlock it again, and have the guest tap the network name a second time.
  • Verify the Contacts requirement. Ensure the specific email address they use for iCloud is the one you have saved in their contact card, and vice versa.
  • Restart both devices if the Bluetooth handshake seems to have stalled.
