Whether you are building a new PC, upgrading from Windows 10, or needing to perform a clean installation to fix persistent system issues, a bootable USB drive is the most reliable way to install Windows 11.
Microsoft provides a free, official tool called the Media Creation Tool that makes this process incredibly straightforward. It automatically downloads the latest version of Windows 11 and formats your USB drive so that a computer can boot directly from it.
In this guide, we will walk you through exactly how to create a Windows 11 bootable USB drive safely and correctly.
What You Need Before You Start
Before you begin the process, ensure you have the following ready:
- A working Windows PC with an internet connection.
- A blank USB flash drive with at least 8 GB of storage space. (Warning: Everything currently on this USB drive will be permanently deleted during the formatting process, so back up any important files first).
- A stable internet connection (the download is several gigabytes in size).
Step 1: Download the Media Creation Tool
To ensure you get a secure, malware-free copy of Windows 11, you must download the tool directly from Microsoft.
- Open your web browser and navigate to the official Download Windows 11 page on the Microsoft website.
- Scroll down to the section titled Create Windows 11 Installation Media.
- Click the blue Download Now button.
- Save the file (usually named
MediaCreationToolW11.exe) to your Downloads folder.
Step 2: Run the Tool and Prepare Your USB
Now that you have the tool, you can begin the creation process.
- Insert your blank 8GB (or larger) USB drive into a working USB port on your computer.
- Locate the
MediaCreationToolW11.exefile you just downloaded and double-click it to run it. You may need to click "Yes" to allow it to make changes to your device. - The tool will launch and say "Getting a few things ready." This can take a minute.
- Read the Microsoft software licence terms and click Accept.
Step 3: Select Language and Edition
The tool will now ask you which version of Windows you want to download.
- By default, the box for Use the recommended options for this PC will be checked. This is usually the best option as it automatically selects the correct language and edition based on the computer you are currently using.
- If you are creating this USB to install Windows on a computer that requires a different language, untick the box and manually select the language from the dropdown menu. (The edition will always be Windows 11).
- Click Next.
Step 4: Choose the USB Flash Drive Option
You will now be asked which media you want to use.
- Select the radio button next to USB flash drive. (Do not select ISO file unless you intend to burn a DVD or create a virtual machine later).
- Click Next.
- A list of removable drives connected to your computer will appear. Select your USB drive from the list. Double-check the drive letter in File Explorer to ensure you are selecting the correct USB drive, as this drive will be wiped.
- Click Next.
Step 5: Wait for the Process to Complete
The Media Creation Tool will now take over completely. This process happens in two phases:
- Downloading Windows 11: The tool will download the entire Windows 11 operating system from Microsoft’s servers. Depending on your internet speed, this could take anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour. You can continue using your PC while this happens.
- Creating the Media: Once downloaded, the tool will format your USB drive and copy the necessary boot files and installation packages onto it.
When the screen says "Your USB flash drive is ready", click Finish. The tool will clean up its temporary files and close.
Next Steps: Booting from the USB
Your USB drive is now a fully functional Windows 11 installation disk. To use it, simply insert it into the computer where you want to install Windows 11, turn the computer on, and rapidly press the boot menu key (often F12, F8, F2, or Del, depending on your motherboard manufacturer) to tell the system to boot from the USB drive instead of the internal hard drive.
