Taking the Guesswork Out of Battery Life
By default, most modern Android phones display battery life using a small visual icon in the top right corner of the screen. As your battery drains throughout the day, the white fill inside this icon slowly drops.
While this minimalist design keeps the status bar looking clean, it forces you to constantly guess exactly how much power you have left. Is the battery icon at 20% or 12%? If you are about to leave for a long commute, or if you are trying to decide whether to turn on power-saving mode, that 8% difference is critical information.
Fortunately, Android allows you to turn on a precise numerical percentage that sits permanently next to (or inside) the battery icon, giving you an exact, real-time readout of your device’s power levels.
How to Show Battery Percentage on Stock Android (Google Pixel, Motorola)
If you are using a phone running a “clean” or stock version of Android (such as a Google Pixel or a Motorola device), the setting is very easy to find.
- Open the Settings app on your phone (the gear icon in your app drawer).
- Scroll down and tap on Battery.
- Look for a toggle switch labeled Battery percentage (it usually says “Show battery percentage in status bar” underneath it).
- Tap the switch to turn it On.
The moment you flip the switch, a small number will instantly appear in the top right corner of your screen next to the battery icon. You do not need to restart your phone.
How to Show Battery Percentage on Samsung Galaxy Phones
Samsung uses a heavily customized version of Android called One UI. Because of this, Samsung hides the battery percentage setting in a slightly different menu related to the status bar, rather than the main battery menu.
- Open the Settings app on your Samsung Galaxy.
- Tap on Notifications.
- Tap on Advanced settings.
- Look near the top of the screen for the toggle labeled Show battery percentage.
- Tap the switch to turn it On.
The percentage will now appear directly next to your battery icon at all times.
How to Show Battery Percentage on OnePlus, Oppo, and Realme
Phones running ColorOS or OxygenOS offer slightly more customization. They actually allow you to choose where the percentage number is displayed to save space on your screen.
- Open the Settings app.
- Scroll down and tap on Notifications & status bar.
- Tap on Status bar.
- Tap on Battery percentage.
- A small pop-up menu will appear giving you three choices:
- Inside battery icon: The number sits directly over the battery graphic, saving space (best for phones with large camera cutouts).
- Outside battery icon: The number sits next to the graphic, making it slightly easier to read.
- Do not show: Turns the feature off.
- Select your preferred style, and the change will apply instantly.
What If I Cannot Find the Setting?
Because there are hundreds of different Android phone manufacturers, menus can vary wildly. If the instructions above do not match your specific phone model, do not waste time digging through menus.
Instead, use the universal search feature built into every modern Android phone:
- Open your Settings app.
- Look for a magnifying glass icon or a search bar at the very top of the screen.
- Tap it and type the word percentage.
- The phone will instantly scan all of its internal menus and provide a direct link to the correct toggle switch, no matter where the manufacturer decided to hide it.
