Why You Should Check Your Battery Health
Unlike smartphones, where battery health is usually displayed prominently in the main settings menu, Windows 11 laptops hide this crucial information deep within the operating system. Over time, all lithium-ion batteries degrade. They lose their ability to hold a full charge, which is why a laptop that once lasted eight hours now dies after just three.
If your laptop is dying quickly, shutting down randomly at 20%, or you are considering buying a used laptop, you need to check its true battery health. This tells you whether the physical battery is permanently degraded and needs replacement, or if software is simply draining the power too fast.
How to Generate a Battery Report in Windows 11
To find your battery health, you must use the Windows Command Prompt to generate a hidden HTML report. This process is entirely safe and only takes a few seconds.
- Click the Start button on your Windows 11 taskbar (or press the Windows key).
- Type
cmdinto the search bar. - You will see the Command Prompt application appear in the search results. Click on it to open the black terminal window.
- In the Command Prompt, carefully type or paste the following exact command:
powercfg /batteryreport - Press Enter.
- The terminal will almost instantly display a message stating: "Battery life report saved to file path C:\Users\[YourUsername]\battery-report.html."
How to Read and Understand the Battery Report
Now that the report is generated, you need to open and interpret it.
- Open File Explorer and navigate to your main user folder (usually located at
C:\Users\YourUsername). - Scroll down and find the file named battery-report.html.
- Double-click the file to open it in your default web browser (like Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome).
The report contains a lot of technical data, but you only need to look at one specific section near the very top of the page: Installed batteries.
Under this section, locate two specific numbers:
- Design Capacity: This number (measured in mWh or milliwatt-hours) is the original, maximum amount of energy your battery was designed to hold when it was brand new in the factory.
- Full Charge Capacity: This number is the maximum amount of energy your battery can actually hold right now.
Calculating Your Battery Health Percentage
To find out your exact battery health, you need to do a tiny bit of math using the two numbers you just found. You simply divide the Full Charge Capacity by the Design Capacity, and multiply by 100.
For example, if your Design Capacity is 50,000 mWh and your Full Charge Capacity is 40,000 mWh:
(40,000 / 50,000) = 0.80 x 100 = 80%
In this example, your battery is at 80% health.
When should you replace the battery?
- 80% to 100%: Your battery is in good to excellent condition. Any rapid draining is likely caused by demanding software or high screen brightness, not a hardware failure.
- 60% to 79%: The battery is showing noticeable wear. You will definitely experience shorter battery life, but it may still be usable depending on your needs.
- Below 60%: Your battery is severely degraded. It is highly recommended that you replace the battery to restore the laptop’s original portability and prevent unexpected shutdowns.
By regularly checking this report, you can track how fast your battery is degrading and make informed decisions about when to repair or replace your hardware.
