How to Automatically Hide the Taskbar in Windows 11

The Windows taskbar is the central hub of your computer, providing instant access to your Start menu, pinned applications, and system tray. However, if you are working on a small laptop screen or an ultrawide monitor where vertical space is at a premium, a permanently visible taskbar can feel like a waste of valuable screen real estate.

By learning how to automatically hide the taskbar in Windows 11, you can force the bar to slide off the bottom of the screen when you are not using it. It will only reappear when you move your mouse cursor to the very bottom edge of your display, giving you a truly full-screen experience for your applications and web browsers.

How to Access Taskbar Settings in Windows 11

Microsoft significantly redesigned the taskbar and its associated configuration menus when transitioning from Windows 10 to Windows 11. The old method of right-clicking and selecting “Properties” no longer works.

To find the new configuration menu, follow these steps:

  1. Locate an empty space on your Windows 11 taskbar (an area where there are no app icons).
  2. Right-click on this empty space.
  3. A small pop-up menu will appear. Click on Taskbar settings.

Alternatively, if you cannot right-click the taskbar for some reason, you can navigate to the exact same menu by opening the Settings app (press the Windows Key + I on your keyboard), clicking Personalisation in the left-hand sidebar, and then selecting Taskbar on the right.

Enabling the Auto-Hide Feature

Once you have the Taskbar settings window open, you need to locate the specific behaviour controls.

  1. Scroll down to the very bottom of the Taskbar settings page.
  2. Click on the section titled Taskbar behaviours to expand a hidden list of options.
  3. Locate the checkbox labelled Automatically hide the taskbar.
  4. Check the box.

The moment you tick this box, your taskbar will instantly slide downwards and disappear beneath the edge of your screen.

How to Use an Auto-Hidden Taskbar

Using an auto-hidden taskbar takes a few minutes to get used to, but the workflow is very simple.

  • To reveal the taskbar: Move your mouse cursor to the absolute bottom edge of your screen and hold it there for a fraction of a second. The taskbar will smoothly slide up into view. You can then click your Start button, check the time, or launch an app as normal.
  • To hide it again: Simply move your mouse cursor away from the taskbar, back into the main area of your screen. The taskbar will automatically slide away.

Troubleshooting: Why Won’t the Taskbar Hide?

Sometimes, even with the setting enabled, the taskbar will stubbornly refuse to disappear. This is almost always caused by an application demanding your attention.

  • Notifications: If an app in your system tray (like Slack, Microsoft Teams, or an antivirus program) has an unread notification, the taskbar will stay visible to ensure you see it. Click the app to clear the notification, and the taskbar will hide.
  • Flashing Apps: If an open application requires your input (for example, a save dialogue box is open in the background), its icon on the taskbar will flash orange. You must click the flashing app and resolve the prompt before the taskbar will hide again.
  • Windows Explorer Glitch: Rarely, the Windows graphical interface can simply get stuck. To fix this, press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open the Task Manager. Find Windows Explorer in the list of processes, right-click it, and select Restart. This will force the taskbar to reload and resume its auto-hide behaviour.
