Google Chrome features an aggressive built-in security tool called “Safe Browsing” that scans every file you attempt to download. While this is excellent for protecting users from malware, it frequently generates false positives. If you are trying to download a legitimate work document, an internal company tool, or a safe open-source ZIP file, Chrome may completely block the download, displaying a red “Dangerous file blocked” warning.
In recent updates, Google redesigned the download manager interface, removing the easily accessible “Keep anyway” button that used to appear at the bottom of the screen. Bypassing this block is now slightly more hidden. Here is exactly how to force Chrome to allow your safe download.
Method 1: Bypass the Block for a Single File (Recommended)
If you only need to download one specific file that you know is 100% safe, you should not disable Chrome’s security features entirely. Instead, use the new download manager to bypass the block just for that specific file.
- Click the Downloads icon (the downward-pointing arrow) located in the top-right corner of your Chrome browser window, next to the URL bar.
- Locate your blocked file in the dropdown list. It will likely have a red icon and state “Dangerous download blocked.”
- Click the small arrow pointing to the right (or the three vertical dots) next to the blocked file’s name.
- A new menu will appear explaining why Chrome blocked the file. Look for the option that says Download suspicious file or Keep anyway.
- Click it. Chrome will now immediately download and save the file to your computer.
By using this method, your browser remains fully protected against future threats, but you are still able to access the file you need.
Method 2: Temporarily Disable “Safe Browsing” (For Persistent Issues)
Sometimes, if you are downloading multiple internal tools from a company server or working with obscure software files, Chrome might block every single one of them. In this scenario, clicking “Keep anyway” repeatedly becomes tedious. You can temporarily disable the Safe Browsing feature, but you must remember to turn it back on afterwards.
- Open Google Chrome and click the three vertical dots in the extreme top-right corner of the window.
- Select Settings from the dropdown menu.
- In the left-hand sidebar of the Settings page, click on Privacy and security.
- In the main window, click on Security.
- Under the “Safe Browsing” section, you will see three options: Enhanced protection, Standard protection, and No protection.
- Select No protection (not recommended).
- A pop-up will appear asking you to confirm this risky action. Click Turn off.
- Return to your original tab and download your files. They will now download instantly without any security checks.
Crucial Warning: Leaving “No protection” enabled makes your computer highly vulnerable to ransomware, spyware, and phishing attacks across the entire internet. As soon as your necessary files have finished downloading, you must immediately return to the Security settings menu and change the setting back to Standard protection.
