When compiling academic essays, business proposals, or official reports in Google Docs, documents frequently require a formal cover page or title sheet. By default, adding a header, company logo, or page number applies that element uniformly across every page in the document. Displaying running headers and page number “1” on an introductory cover page looks unprofessional and breaches standard publishing guidelines.
Google Docs provides a built-in formatting feature called “Different first page” specifically designed for title sheets. Enabling this setting disconnects the top and bottom margins of page one from the rest of the document, allowing you to suppress headers and footers entirely on the opening page while preserving consistent numbering across subsequent sections.
Using the Different First Page Option in Google Docs
The standard way to isolate your cover page is through the header contextual menu.
- Open your document in Google Docs on a web browser.
- Double-click inside the Header area (the blank space at the very top of page 1), or click Insert in the top menu and select Headers & footers > Header.
- A dashed horizontal dividing line appears with a small settings box labelled Header.
- Tick the checkbox marked Different first page.
- Delete any existing text, images, or page numbers from the first-page header area. Because the first page is now unlinked, removing content here will not delete headers from page 2 onward.
- Click anywhere in the main body of the document to exit header editing mode.
Removing Footers and Page Numbers from the Cover Page
If your document also contains running footers, document confidentiality stamps, or bottom page numbers:
- Double-click inside the Footer area at the bottom of the first page.
- Verify that the checkbox for Different first page is ticked (checking it in the header usually applies it to the footer as well).
- Highlight and delete any footer text or numbering fields displayed on page 1.
- Scroll down to page 2 and confirm that your running footer content remains intact.
Starting Page Numbering at 1 on Page Two
Hiding the page number on the first page often leaves page 2 numbered as “2”. If your formatting guidelines require numbering to begin at “1” on page 2:
- Click Insert in the top menu bar.
- Hover over Page numbers and click More options at the bottom of the sub-menu.
- In the dialogue box:
- Under Position, choose whether page numbers appear in the Header or Footer.
- Untick the checkbox marked Show on first page.
- Under Numbering, set Start at to
0(or1depending on whether you want page 2 labelled as page 1). Setting it to0ensures the hidden cover page is zero, making page 2 display as “1”.
- Click Apply to update the numbering scheme throughout the document.
Managing Headers Across Complex Multi-Section Documents
If your document contains multiple distinct sections (such as an executive summary or appendix) requiring independent headers:
- Use Section Breaks: Instead of inserting standard page breaks, insert section breaks via Insert > Break > Section break (next page).
- Unlink from previous section: Double-click the header of the new section and untick the Link to previous box. This allows you to apply unique headers or suppress them entirely for that specific chapter.
