In Apple’s Continuity ecosystem, devices sharing the same Apple Account (Apple ID) enjoy seamless integration. One such feature is Instant Hotspot, which allows an iPad to detect an iPhone’s Personal Hotspot and automatically connect to it whenever a known Wi-Fi network drops out or experiences a brief signal dip.
While convenient while travelling, this automated handover can be costly in daily life. If your home or office Wi-Fi flickers, your iPad may silently connect to your iPhone in the background and begin streaming 4K video, downloading iPadOS updates, or backing up iCloud photos over your cellular carrier connection, quickly exhausting your monthly data allowance.
Step 1: Open iPad Wi-Fi Settings
Hotspot association preferences are controlled inside iPadOS Wi-Fi configurations:
- Open the Settings app on your iPad.
- In the left-hand navigation menu, tap Wi-Fi.
- Ensure Wi-Fi is toggled On so network preferences are visible.
Step 2: Adjust the Auto-Join Hotspot Preference
Below the list of nearby Wi-Fi networks:
- Scroll down to the bottom of the right-hand pane to find the Auto-Join Hotspot setting.
- Tap Auto-Join Hotspot to open its options.
- You will see three available settings:
- Never: The iPad will never connect to an iPhone or cellular hotspot unless you manually select it from your Wi-Fi list.
- Ask to Join: If no known Wi-Fi network is available, a prompt will appear on your iPad screen asking for permission before connecting.
- Automatic: Default behaviour. The iPad automatically jumps onto any available Personal Hotspot without alerting you.
- Select Never (or Ask to Join if you prefer an interactive confirmation).
Step 3: Disable Auto-Join for a Specific Saved Hotspot
If you occasionally use your iPhone’s hotspot but want to prevent automatic reconnection for that specific network:
- While connected to the hotspot (or when it appears in your network list), tap the small Info (i) button next to the hotspot name.
- Toggle off the switch labelled Auto-Join.
Your iPad will now remain strictly connected to your home, school, or office Wi-Fi, completely preventing unexpected mobile data usage and saving battery life across both devices.
