Line numbering provides an indispensable reference framework for legal agreements, academic scripts, collaborative peer reviews, and technical documentation. While writers previously relied on third-party extensions or complex table workarounds, Google Docs includes a native line numbering feature that allows you to calculate and display line numbers across an entire document or within designated document sections.
Requirements for Using Line Numbers in Google Docs
Before enabling line numbers, ensure your document is configured in Pages format. The line numbers tool is disabled in pageless mode because line positions vary dynamically without defined page boundaries.
To confirm your document setup:
- Open your document in Google Docs.
- Click File in the top menu bar and select Page setup.
- Ensure the Pages tab is selected at the top of the dialogue box.
- Click OK if you switched from Pageless mode.
Enabling Line Numbers Across an Entire Document
To display continuous or page-based numbering across all pages:
- Click Tools in the top menu bar.
- Select Line numbers from the drop-down menu. A Line numbers sidebar panel will open on the right-hand side of your document.
- Toggle the switch labelled Show line numbers to the active position.
Once toggled, Google Docs renders consecutive numbers along the left margin of every line containing text.
Customising Line Number Numbering Schemes and Margins
The sidebar settings allow you to refine how numbers increment and reset:
- Continue throughout the document: Keeps a running tally from line 1 through the final line of your manuscript, which is standard practice in legal contracts and formal patent applications.
- Restart on each page: Resets the count back to 1 at the beginning of each page, ideal for academic manuscripts and proofreading exercises.
- Restart each section: Restarts numbering whenever a Next Page or Continuous section break is reached.
Configuring Line Numbers for Specific Sections Only
In many formal manuscripts, introductory front matter such as tables of contents, abstracts, and cover pages must omit line numbers, while the main body requires them.
- Place your cursor where the line-numbered body text begins.
- Click Insert > Break > Section break (next page) or Section break (continuous).
- Open Tools > Line numbers.
- Under the Apply to setting, select This section rather than Entire document.
- Select whether numbering should restart at 1 for this specific section.
How to Hide or Remove Line Numbers
To disable line numbers when preparing a clean final copy for export or client delivery, return to Tools > Line numbers and toggle Show line numbers off. All margins instantly reset to their original alignment without altering your document styles or indentation.
