Running out of storage space on an iPhone is a common problem, especially for users taking high-resolution photos or downloading large games. When you reach your storage limit, you cannot download new software updates, take new photos, or even receive certain messages.
While the traditional solution is to delete applications entirely, doing so also deletes all the personal data, settings, and documents associated with that app. Apple provides a smarter alternative called “Offloading.” This feature uninstalls the heavy core application file to free up gigabytes of space, but securely preserves all your personal data so you can pick up exactly where you left off if you ever reinstall the app.
How to Offload Apps Manually
If you need to free up space immediately for a software update or a large video recording, you can manually select which apps to offload based on their size.
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Scroll down and tap on General.
- Tap on iPhone Storage.
The system will take a few moments to calculate your storage usage. Once loaded, you will see a list of all installed apps, sorted from largest to smallest.
- Tap on an application that you rarely use but want to keep the data for (such as a large travel app or a game you haven’t played in months).
- Tap the blue Offload App button.
- Confirm your choice by tapping Offload App again in the pop-up menu.
The application’s icon will remain on your Home Screen, but it will now have a small cloud icon with a downward arrow next to its name, indicating that the core app has been removed from the device.
How to Enable Automatic Offloading
If you prefer a hands-off approach to storage management, you can instruct iOS to automatically offload apps that you have not opened in a long time whenever your iPhone starts running low on storage space.
- Open the Settings app.
- Scroll down and tap on App Store.
- Scroll to the very bottom of the page and locate the Offload Unused Apps toggle switch.
- Toggle the switch to the ON position (it will turn green).
Your iPhone will now quietly manage its own storage in the background. It will never offload an app that you use regularly, and it will only activate this feature when you are critically low on space.
How to Reinstall an Offloaded App
Because the app icon remains on your Home Screen, restoring the app is incredibly simple.
Just tap the app icon. If you are connected to the internet, the iPhone will immediately begin downloading the application from the App Store. The icon will show a downloading progress circle, similar to a new installation. Once the download is complete, the app will open normally, and all your saved data, logins, and preferences will be exactly as you left them.
