How to Configure Dual Monitor Taskbar and Wallpaper Settings in Windows 11

Connecting a second display to your Windows 11 laptop or desktop dramatically expands your screen real estate, allowing you to reference documents on one screen while actively coding, writing, or presenting on the other. However, right out of the box, Windows 11 frequently mirrors displays incorrectly, places windows in the wrong mouse direction, or hides the taskbar on the secondary screen. Taking five minutes to configure your multi-display preferences creates a seamless, efficient dual-monitor workspace.

Step 1: Arrange Display Alignment and Set Primary Monitor

Ensuring your mouse pointer glides naturally across screens without getting stuck at display borders is essential:

  1. Right-click any empty area on your desktop and select Display settings (or press Windows Key + I > System > Display).
  2. At the top of the window, you will see numbered rectangular boxes representing your physical monitors. Click Identify to display large numbers on each screen so you know which is 1 and which is 2.
  3. Click and drag the numbered rectangles left, right, or vertically to match their physical arrangement on your desk.
  4. Click Apply to save the arrangement.
  5. Click on your main monitor in the diagram, expand the Multiple displays section below, and check the box labelled Make this my main display. This ensures notifications, login screens, and default game windows open on your primary screen.

Step 2: Show and Customise the Taskbar on Both Screens

By default, Windows 11 might only show the taskbar on your primary monitor:

  1. Open Settings > Personalisation > Taskbar.
  2. Scroll down and click on Taskbar behaviours.
  3. Check the box labelled Show my taskbar on all displays.
  4. Configure how app icons appear across your screens using the dropdown for When using multiple displays, show my taskbar apps on:
    • All taskbars: Shows every open program icon on both screens.
    • Main taskbar and taskbar where window is open: Keeps the main bar complete while secondary screens show only apps residing on that screen.
    • Taskbar where window is open: Organizes icons strictly by the monitor on which each app window is physically open (recommended for clean multitasking).

Step 3: Set Different Wallpapers for Each Monitor

Personalising your dual-screen setup with separate desktop backgrounds:

  1. Navigate to Settings > Personalisation > Background.
  2. Ensure Personalise your background is set to Picture.
  3. Click Browse photos and select your desired images.
  4. In the Recent images thumbnail strip, right-click the image you want and select Set for desktop > Desktop 1 or Desktop 2.
