Windows 11 includes a feature called Focus that helps you reduce distractions by silencing notifications and minimising interruptions while you work. Whether you need to concentrate during a meeting, block notifications while studying, or simply want uninterrupted time, Focus makes it easy to control what can disturb you and when.
This guide explains how to set up Focus sessions, customise what gets through during Focus time, create automatic schedules, and use Focus alongside the built-in Clock app timer.
How Focus Works in Windows 11
Focus in Windows 11 suppresses notification banners and prevents apps from flashing in the taskbar. When Focus is active:
- Notification banners do not appear on screen.
- Notification sounds are silenced.
- Badge notifications on taskbar icons may be hidden.
- Notifications are still collected in the Notification Centre, so you can review them later.
Focus does not block anything permanently. It simply holds notifications until your Focus session ends, so nothing important is lost.
Start a Focus Session Quickly
The fastest way to start a Focus session is from the Notification Centre:
- Click the date and time area in the bottom-right corner of the taskbar to open the Notification Centre.
- Click the Focus button.
- Set the duration for your session (for example, 30 minutes, 1 hour, or a custom duration).
- Click Start focus session.
A small timer appears in the Notification Centre showing how much time remains. When the session ends, notifications resume normally.
To end a Focus session early, open the Notification Centre and click End focus session.
Configure Focus Settings
To customise how Focus behaves:
- Open Settings (press Windows + I).
- Go to System → Focus.
Here you can configure:
- Session duration — Set the default length of your Focus sessions.
- Show timer in the Clock app — When enabled, the Windows Clock app displays a countdown timer during Focus sessions.
- Hide badges on taskbar apps — Removes the unread count badges from taskbar icons during Focus.
- Hide flashing on taskbar apps — Prevents apps from flashing in the taskbar to get your attention.
- Do not disturb integration — Focus automatically enables Do Not Disturb during sessions.
Set Up Do Not Disturb Rules
Do Not Disturb works alongside Focus to control which notifications get through. You can find these settings at:
Settings → System → Notifications
Here you can:
- Turn Do Not Disturb on or off manually — Toggle it directly from this page.
- Set priority notifications — Choose specific apps and contacts that can still send notifications even when Do Not Disturb is active.
- Set automatic rules — Schedule Do Not Disturb to activate automatically during specific times, when duplicating a display, when playing games, or when using an app in full screen.
Configure Priority Notifications
Priority notifications are the exceptions to Do Not Disturb. Even when all other notifications are silenced, priority notifications will still appear.
- Go to Settings → System → Notifications.
- Click Set priority notifications.
- Here you can allow:
- Calls and reminders — Incoming calls and scheduled reminders will always appear.
- Specific apps — Add individual apps whose notifications should always come through.
For example, you might want to silence everything except notifications from Microsoft Teams during work hours, or allow alarms and reminders while blocking social media notifications.
Schedule Focus Sessions Automatically
You can set Windows 11 to automatically turn on Do Not Disturb at specific times, so you do not need to remember to enable it manually.
- Go to Settings → System → Notifications.
- Expand Turn on do not disturb automatically.
- Enable any of these automatic rules:
- During these times — Set a start time, end time, and which days of the week to apply the schedule.
- When duplicating your display — Silences notifications during presentations.
- When playing a game — Prevents interruptions during gaming.
- When using an app in full-screen mode — Blocks notifications during video playback or focused work.
The time-based schedule is particularly useful. For example, you can automatically enable Do Not Disturb from 22:00 to 07:00 every night, so notifications do not disturb you during sleep.
Use Focus with the Clock App Timer
Windows 11 integrates Focus sessions with the built-in Clock app. When you start a Focus session, the Clock app can display a countdown timer and track your focused time.
- Open the Clock app from the Start menu.
- Click Focus sessions in the left sidebar.
- Set the duration of your focus session.
- Optionally, link your Spotify account to play background music during Focus sessions.
- Optionally, link Microsoft To Do to display your task list alongside the timer.
- Click Start focus session.
The Clock app also tracks your daily Focus goal, showing how many minutes you have spent in focused work. You can set a daily goal in the Clock app’s Focus sessions settings.
Manage Notifications for Individual Apps
Beyond Focus and Do Not Disturb, you can fine-tune notifications for every individual app installed on your computer:
- Go to Settings → System → Notifications.
- Scroll down to see the list of apps that can send notifications.
- Click on any app to customise its notification behaviour:
- Turn notifications on or off entirely.
- Show or hide notification banners.
- Show or hide notifications in the Notification Centre.
- Play or mute notification sounds.
- Set the notification priority (Top, High, or Normal).
- Control the number of visible notifications in the Notification Centre.
This gives you granular control over exactly which apps can interrupt you and how prominently their notifications appear.
