How to Turn Off Auto-Correct and Predictive Text on Android

While smartphone keyboards are designed to accelerate typing by predicting words and automatically fixing typos on touchscreens, aggressive auto-correct often creates more frustration than convenience. When typing in multiple languages, using regional slang, sending abbreviations, or entering unusual names, auto-correct frequently replaces intended words with nonsensical substitutes right as you hit send. If you prefer complete manual control over what you type, you can easily disable auto-correction and predictive text on Android.

Why Turn Off Keyboard Auto-Correction?

Disabling automatic text replacement restores exact typing control:

  • Multilingual Typing: Prevents the keyboard from forcing English corrections when typing bilingual messages or colloquial phrases.
  • Zero Unwanted Word Replacements: What you tap is exactly what appears on screen—no sudden surprises after pressing the spacebar.
  • Clean Suggestion Strip: You can keep spelling suggestions visible above the keyboard while turning off automatic replacements, giving you manual choice.

How to Turn Off Auto-Correct on Gboard (Google Pixel, Motorola, Xiaomi)

Gboard is the default keyboard on most modern Android devices:

  1. Open any app that displays a keyboard (such as Messages, WhatsApp, or Chrome) and tap any text field to bring up Gboard.
  2. Tap the Settings gear icon on the top toolbar of the keyboard (if hidden, tap the four-squares icon to reveal it).
  3. Tap on Text correction.
  4. Scroll down to the Corrections section.
  5. Locate the toggle for Auto-correction and switch it Off.
  6. Optional: If you also want to stop Gboard from predicting your next word, scroll to Suggestions and turn off Next-word suggestions.
  7. Optional: Turn off Auto-capitalisation if you dislike sentences automatically forcing capital letters after full stops.

How to Turn Off Auto-Replace on Samsung Galaxy Devices

Samsung phones use the proprietary Samsung Keyboard by default:

  1. Open the Settings app on your Samsung Galaxy phone.
  2. Scroll down and tap on General management.
  3. Tap on Samsung Keyboard settings.
  4. Tap on Auto replace.
  5. Toggle off the switch next to your primary language (e.g., English).
  6. To also disable word suggestions above the keyboard, go back one step and turn off the toggle for Predictive text.

With auto-correction deactivated, your keyboard will respect your exact keystrokes without overriding your words.
