Windows 11 includes a legacy cursor feature known as “Enhance pointer precision” that is enabled by default across all laptop and desktop installations. While marketed as a helpful productivity enhancement, this setting is actually hardware mouse acceleration. Instead of moving your cursor a fixed distance based strictly on how far you physically slide your mouse, Windows dynamically alters cursor velocity based on how fast you move your hand. For competitive gamers, graphic designers, video editors, and precision CAD users, this variable speed disrupts muscle memory and leads to missed clicks.
Why Disable Mouse Acceleration?
Switching from dynamic acceleration to a 1:1 linear tracking relationship provides significant handling advantages:
- Consistent Muscle Memory: Moving your mouse exactly two inches across your mouse pad always moves your cursor the exact same pixel distance across your screen, regardless of hand speed.
- Precise Aim in Games: First-person shooter (FPS) players can flick to targets reliably without overshooting or undershooting during fast combat motions.
- Pixel-Perfect Design Work: Digital illustrators and photo editors gain granular control when tracing bezier curves or making delicate pen adjustments in Photoshop or Illustrator.
Method 1: Turn Off Pointer Precision via the Windows 11 Settings App
The modern Windows 11 Settings interface provides direct access to legacy mouse properties:
- Press Windows Key + I to launch the Settings app.
- Click on Bluetooth & devices in the left navigation sidebar.
- Select Mouse from the list of device categories.
- Scroll down to the Related settings section and click on Additional mouse settings.
- A classic Mouse Properties dialogue box will appear. Click on the Pointer Options tab at the top.
- Under the Motion header, locate the checkbox labelled Enhance pointer precision.
- Uncheck the box to disable mouse acceleration.
- Ensure the pointer speed slider is positioned at the 6th notch (dead centre) out of 11. This guarantees an exact 1:1 sensor-to-screen pixel ratio without software interpolation.
- Click Apply, then click OK to save your changes.
Method 2: Access Pointer Options via the Run Dialogue
If you want to bypass the modern Settings menus entirely:
- Press Windows Key + R to open the Run dialogue box.
- Type
main.cplinto the field and press Enter. - The classic Mouse Properties window opens immediately.
- Switch to the Pointer Options tab, untick Enhance pointer precision, and click OK.
Adjusting DPI via Dedicated Mouse Software
Once Windows mouse acceleration is disabled, your cursor may feel slightly slower initially because flick motions no longer trigger acceleration boosts. If you need faster cursor speed, adjust the native DPI (dots per inch) hardware setting inside your mouse manufacturer software (such as Logitech G HUB, Razer Synapse, or SteelSeries GG) rather than turning Windows acceleration back on.
