The Emergency Tethering Vector
If you are travelling with your laptop and the hotel Wi-Fi fails, or if you are working from a cafe and the public network is unacceptably slow and insecure, you are effectively cut off from the internet. However, your iPhone possesses a dedicated, high-speed cellular data connection. You can instruct the iOS kernel to transform the iPhone into a localized, encrypted Wi-Fi router, broadcasting a signal that your laptop can connect to, thereby bridging your laptop to the cellular network.
How to Turn On the Hotspot
Apple refers to this tethering protocol as the “Personal Hotspot,” and it can be activated directly from the primary Settings matrix.
1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
2. Look at the very top section of the Settings list (directly below your Apple ID and Bluetooth).
3. Tap on the option labelled Personal Hotspot (it features a green icon with two interlocking rings).
* Note: If this option is greyed out or missing, you must contact your cellular carrier; some budget data plans explicitly block tethering capabilities.
4. You will see a toggle switch at the top of the screen labelled Allow Others to Join.
5. Tap the toggle switch to move it to the On position (it will turn green).
6. Crucial Security Step: Look directly below the toggle at the Wi-Fi Password field. You must set a complex password here. If you leave it blank or use “password123,” anyone within 30 feet of you can connect to your phone and drain your monthly data allowance.
Connecting the Laptop: Leave the iPhone screen open on the Personal Hotspot page. On your laptop, click the Wi-Fi icon. Look for a network named exactly after your iPhone (e.g., “John’s iPhone”). Click it, enter the password you just created, and your laptop will instantly route its traffic through your cellular connection.
