How to Export Your Bookmarks from Google Chrome

The Data Portability Vector

If you have spent years meticulously organizing hundreds of bookmarks into specific folders for your research or daily workflow, that data is incredibly valuable. While Google Chrome can synchronize these bookmarks across your devices using your Google Account, relying entirely on cloud synchronization is risky. If you are migrating to a completely different browser (like Firefox or Safari), or if you simply want a hard, physical backup of your data in case your Google Account is compromised, you must manually extract the database.

How to Export Your Bookmarks

Chrome includes a dedicated utility to compile your entire bookmark hierarchy into a single, universally readable HTML file.

1. Open Google Chrome.
2. Click the three vertical dots in the top-right corner to open the main menu.
3. Hover your cursor over the Bookmarks and lists option.
4. Select Bookmark manager from the fly-out menu (or press Ctrl + Shift + O).
5. The Bookmark Manager will open in a new tab. Look at the top-right corner of this specific page, located directly below the main Chrome menu button. You will see a second set of three vertical dots.
6. Click these secondary dots.
7. Select Export bookmarks.
8. A standard file save dialogue will appear. Chrome will automatically name the file `bookmarks_[date].html`.

Choose a secure location (such as a local documents folder or an external USB drive) and click Save. This HTML file contains every single bookmark and folder structure; you can now import it directly into any other modern web browser on the market.
